Public Opinion Poll, October 2020


In 2020, the upward trend in support of the death penalty in Serbia has been arrested for the first time since 2013. The number of respondents in favour of the death penalty decreased by 4 per cent, from 58 to 54. On the other hand, the percentage of those against it has increased by 5, from 25 to 30. The percentage of the undecided has fallen by 1, from 17 to 16.

When the undecided are excluded, 64% of respondents were for the death penalty and 36% against it.

Voters of all parties favour capital punishment, with the exception of a small DJB ("Enough is enough") party, which did not make it to the parliament:

Urban respondents oppose capital punishment more often than those from rural areas:

Regionally, the highest percentage of those supporting capital punihsment live in Vojvodina, followed by Central Serbia and Belgrade:

The poll (omnibus) was administered by Ipsos Strategic Marketing as a telephone survey (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) on a nationally representative sample (two-stage random representative stratified sample), from 15 to 28 October 2020. The number of respondents in the realized sample was 1,010. The integral report is available here.
