Public Opinion Poll, September 2019


In 2019, support for the death penalty in Serbia has again increased slightly, from 56 to 58 per cent. On the other hand, the percentage of those against it has also increased slightly, from 24 to 25 per cent. In consequence the percentage of the undecided has fallen from 20 t0 17.


This year’s results:

When the undecided are excluded, 70% of respondents were for the death penalty and 30% against it, the same as in 2018.

The increasing trend in support for the death penalty, begun in 2013, continues:

As usual, women are against the death penalty more often than men:

This year, there is no difference in attitudes by gender: both younger and older respondents are for the death penalty in the same proportion – 70%:

Democratic voters are overwhelmingly (66%) against capital punishment, while all others are even more overwhelmingly for it:

Urban respondents oppose capital punishment more often than those from rural areas:

Regionally, the highest percentage of those supporting capital punihsment live in Vojvodina, followed by Central Serbia and Belgrade:

The better educated repondents are more often against capital punishment:

The poll („face-to-face“ survey of public opinion – omnibus) was administered by Ipsos Strategic Marketing, using the same methodology as in the past twelve years, on a nationally representative sample (three-stage random representative stratified sample), from 14 to 28 September 2018. The number of respondents in the realized sample was 1,006. The integral report is available here.
